Frederick was born in Burnley and in 1939 he was single and lodging with the Martin family as well as an older brother, James, who was working in the cotton factory.

On the day of his death, Frederick was serving aboard the unescorted British Motor Merchant 'Empire Stanley' which was on route from Durban South Africa to Aden Yemen carrying a cargo of 8890 tons of coal. At 15.50 hours on 17 Aug 1943, the vessel was torpedoed and sunk by U-boat U-197 south-southeast of Cap Sainte Marie, Madagascar. The master, 18 crew members, one passenger and five gunners, including Frederick, were lost. Of the 29 survivors rescued, 20 were landed at Bombay and 9 at Durban.
