Frederick was born in Brixton, London, the son of a piano dealer and tuner and the eldest of four children with two sisters and a brother.
Frederick enlisted in the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment in June 1911 and gave his occupation as piano tuner. At the time he was 5' 8 ½ " tall and weighing 8st 12lb with black hair brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He was described by his former employer as honest, smart and industrious. Frederick served in both peacetime and wartime and married Beatrice Victoria Louise in February 1915. Beatrice Violet, their only child, was born later the same year in Chipping Sodbury.
Frederick was appointed Lance Corporal in March 1914 and promoted to Corporal seven months later. He was further promoted to sergeant just two months later in December 1914. Frederick served in Italy in 1917 and was in Marseilles in March of the following year and Etaples in June 1918. He was not in good health during 1918 as he was admitted to hospital in February with myalgia and in March and June with trench fever. On each occasion he was discharged back to duty. Frederick was killed in action during The Battles of the Hindenburg Line (12 September – 12 October 1918). His personal effects which were returned to his wife consisted of a letter and a broken rosary.
