Robert was the 2nd eldest of 4 children with an older brother and 2 younger sisters. He was the son of a gardener who had seen service in WW1.

Robert worked at Thornbury Grammar School after being in India for seven years with the 2nd Gloucester Regiment. He married Doris May Bishop in 1929 and together they had a daughter June and a son Jeffrey who were aged 9 and 4 respectively at the time of his death.

On the day of his death, he was on his way to duty as Home Guard (6th Gloucestershire - South Gloucester Battalion) when he was he was knocked down and killed by a motorcycle being driven during the blackout. He was buried with full military honours.

Robert's older brother John was also killed during WW2.
