Further information:

Frederick was born in Easton, Bristol and after leaving school, worked as a shoe repairer. He enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1911 and later that same year was stationed in China and the East Indies. Frederick was described as 5' 5" tall with light brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.
Frederick's first ship was the Impregnable and he served on several different ships in both peacetime and wartime. He joined the battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable in December 1913 and died during The Battle of Jutland (31/5/1916 -1/6/1916). He was killed on the first day of the battle, when the “Indefatigable” was hit amidships by two salvos of gunfire from the German battlecruiser “Von Der Tann”. One of the shells is thought to have scored a direct hit on the ship's magazine causing it to explode. The “Indefatigable” then sank by the stern within seconds taking 1,017 of her crew, including Frederick with her.
