Further information:
George was born in Minchinhampton Gloucestershire, the son of a railway worker and a middle child of five with three sisters and a brother. His younger brother John died in France on active service, four months before George.
George enlisted in the North Somerset Yeomanry in July 1915. He was described as 5' 9" tall with brown hair, blue eyes a fair complexion and of good military character. George was posted to France in January 1916 with the British Expeditionary Force, where he served for four months. Whilst fighting in the Somme area, he was admitted to hospital in Rouen with a severe attack of pleurisy, brought on by exposure to poor conditions. George was transferred back to England in May 1916, with a diagnosis of TB and continued to serve on the Home Front for a further year before being discharged from the army as unfit for duty, in July 1917. At that time his breathing was described as poor and he was significantly underweight. He was sent to a sanatorium and died of tuberculosis two months later. His death was registered in Keynsham.
