George enlisted in the Navy in September 1910 at the age of 17, giving his age as 18, when he was described as being 5'7 ½ " tall with brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion. He served in both peacetime and wartime and his first and last ship was HMS Vivid II. He was promoted from Stoker to Leading Stoker in 1913 then to Petty Officer Stoker in 1916.
