George was the son of a porter and the youngest child of 6. He had 2 older brothers and 3 older sisters. George married Eileen Scott in 1937 and together they had 3 children.
On the day of his death George was serving aboard the unescorted British Steam Merchant the Registan which was on route from Trinidad to Philadelphia carrying 1319 tons of general cargo. At 01.12 hours on 29 Sep 1942, the Registan was torpedoed and sunk by U-boat U-332 about 140 miles east of Barbados. Eleven crew members and five gunners, including George, were lost. The 38 survivors were picked up and taken to Pernambuco, Brazil.
