Further information:
George’s 63 company went out to France with the British Expeditionary Force and George was reported as missing presumed killed in action around the 16th June. At that time, 63 company was known to have been amongst the 6000 individuals aboard the SS Lancastria, fleeing France, when it was sunk on 17th June off the coast of St Nazaire by German bombers. 3,500 souls lost their lives in this tragedy which went unreported at the time because of potential damage to morale. It is possible that George, whose body was never found, was amongst these.
