In 1941 George served in Malta then joined the South African Air Force in 1943. On the 13th October 1944 George’s crew were taking part in an operation to drop supplies to partisans in Italy, which involved 20 aircraft. His crew of 8 were flying in Liberator VI KG875 when it hit very bad weather and crashed at Valprato Soana North West Italy, killing all on board. Their aircraft was one of six that were lost during the operation.
