Further information:

George was born in Siston, Kingswood and was known as Herbert George as a child but his army records name him variously as George Herbert and Herbert George. He was the son of a haulier and a middle child of five with three sisters and a brother.

George served with the 1st Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment). George’s battalion mobilised to Belgium in 1914 and as part of the British Expeditionary Force they fought in various actions on the Western Front including the Battle of Mons, the Marne and the First Battle of Ypres where they suffered very heavy losses. They subsequently joined the 99th infantry brigade and fought with them for the rest of the war. George was recorded as killed in action but as the battalion was not taking part in a specific engagement on that day, it is likely that he died in the ongoing trench warfare that resulted in around 300 deaths per day throughout the war.

George's body was never identified and The Arras Memorial where he is remembered, commemorates almost 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom, South Africa and New Zealand who died in the Arras sector between the spring of 1916 and 7 August 1918, the eve of the Advance to Victory, and have no known grave.
