George was the son of a coal miner and ex-WW1 serviceman, and he was also the eldest child of seven children with two sisters and four brothers.

George served with the 756 Field Company, Royal Engineers.

George went over to France in the Normandy Landings and with his company advanced through the region liberating towns from German occupation. George was killed in action near the town of St Pierre Sur Dives, and was initially buried there before being transferred after the war to St Desir War Cemetery.
