Further information:

George was the fifth son of William (Died 1911) and Rosina’s ten children. His siblings being Florrie, Sarah Ann, Caroline, Charles, John, Thomas, Mary, Bill and Frederick. George was born in October 1897 (Baptised 30.10.1897 All Saints Church Winterbourne Down).

George is commemorated on the Baku Memorial (Azerbaijan), the Winterbourne Down All Saints Church memorial and the Whiteshill Common Memorial (Hambrook).

The 9th Battalion Worcester Regiment was raised in August 1914 as part of Kitchener’s New Army and saw service in the Gallipoli and Mesopotamia campaigns. George probably joined the Battalion in 1917 or 1918 whilst they were serving in Mesopotamia.

In 1918, the British sent a small force to defend Azerbaijan from an Otterman invasion, following the decline of the Russian army after the revolution. This was called the "Dunsterforce", and this included soldiers from the 9th Btn Worcestershire Regiment.

George’s brother-in-law George Ernest Lloyd (married to his sister Caroline) was killed in France in November 1916 and is also commemorated on the Winterbourne Down All Saints Church memorial and the Whiteshill Common Memorial (Hambrook)
