George was the son of a China merchant. He married Gertrude Nelly Bathe in1907 and they had two daughters, Gertrude and Gwyneth who were adults at the time of his death.
The SS Carare left Avonmouth on her last voyage, on the afternoon of 28th May 1940, with 97 crew and 29 passengers on board. The ship struck a mine in the Bristol Channel and sunk killing George, 6 other crew members and 3 passengers. The survivors were picked up by a naval patrol boat and taken to Barry Dock.
