George was born in Thornbury, the son of a cattleman and a middle child of seven with four older brothers and thee younger sisters. George married Jane Smart in 1917, just over a year before he died.
George served with "B" Company 1st/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. George’s battalion mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne at the end of March 1915 where the formation became the 144th Brigade of the 48th Division and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including The Battle of Albert and The Battle of the Ancre in 1916 and the pursuit of The German Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and The Battle of Poelcapelle during 1917. His battalion moved to Italy in November 1917 to strengthen the resistance and to fight on the Asiago Plateau. George was killed during the Battle of Asiago (15-16 June 1918) when the Austrians attacked in force from Grappa to Canove. The Allied line was penetrated to a depth of about 1,000 metres on 15th June but the lost ground was retaken the next day and the line re-established.
