George's battalion (the 1st, Glosters) mobilised to France in August 1914 and fought in the Battle and Retreat from Mons and the Battle of the Aisne. George was killed in action during the First Battle of Ypres (19 October – 22 November 1914) the result of which was indecisive at a cost to the allies of over 150,000 casualties. George's body was never identified, and The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where he is remembered, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and have no known grave.
