Further information:

Gilbert was born in St George, Bristol the son of a confectioner and a middle child of three with an older sister and a younger brother who was also a confectioner. Gilbert married Florence Emily Land, another confectioner, in October 1914 and their only child Elly was born in January 1915. Elly was just 3 years old when her father died.

Gilbert's 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment moved to France in March 1916, having previously fought in Gallipoli. It engaged in various actions on the Western Front including The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Langemarck and The Battle of Messines.

Gilbert was originally reported as missing, which was changed to presumed killed in action six months later although his body was never identified. The Ploegsteert Memorial where Gilbert is remembered, commemorates more than 11,000 servicemen of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in this sector during the First World War and have no known grave. Most of those commemorated, including Gilbert, were killed in the course of the day-to-day trench warfare which characterised this part of the line.
