Gilbert Reed was born in Iron Acton, the son of Robert and Mary Jane Reed and brother of Elizabeth, Mary and William. His father was a coal miner

Gilbert enlisted in Buxton, Derbyshire and joined the 7th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment. He died of wounds and is buried in the Rocquigny Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt (Ref: V1.E.16), France

Gilbert Reed is remembered on the Rangeworthy (Methodist) Church Memorial, on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board (under Iron Acton), now at Yate and District Heritage Centre and on the North Road School Plaque
