Gilbert was born in Kingswood, the son of a warehouse man and an only child.
Gilbert would have enlisted on his 18th birthday in September of 1917 and with his battalion (the 4th, Glosters) was stationed in Seaton Delaval, Northumberland when he was taken ill. Gilbert died in No 1 Northern General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, a military hospital set up in requisitioned University buildings. The cause of his death was recorded as disease, but did not specify what. He was buried near his home.
