Harold was born in Bitton, the son of a bootmaker and a middle child of ten children with five brothers and four sisters. An older brother Thomas also died in the service of his country, two years after Harold.

Harold mobilised to France with the 14th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment in January 1916 and fought on the Western Front. He was killed in action during the Battles of the Somme (1 July 1916 – 18 November 1916) which were an allied defeat resulting in minor territorial gain at a cost of 620,000 casualties. The cemetery where he is buried was used by front line field ambulances and fighting units.
