Henry was the son of a labourer and was born in New Cross South East London before the family moved to Kent. He had a younger brother and a younger sister.

On the day of his death Henry was serving aboard the SS Baron Carnegie which was on route from Swansea to Takoradi, Ghana carrying a cargo of ballast. On the 11th June 1941 the vessel was torpedoed by German aircraft 15 miles W of St David’s Head and later sank in tow. 25 crew members including Henry were lost. Originally reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed in action 3 months later.
