Henry was born near Siston Common, the son of a general labourer and a middle child of eight children with four sisters and three brothers. In 1901 he and several of his siblings were working in the local boot trade in Kingswood. Henry married Louisa Kate Webb in November 1906 and by 1911 they had two children, a boy and a girl.
Henry enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1914 and served with M Anti-Aircraft Battery, 3rd Battalion. He died 9 months after the end of the war from osteomyelitis of his right femur and septicaemia, which would have been complications from a war wound.
