Henry Elias Powell was born on 17th February 1894 in Rangeworthy. His parents were Noah and Rhoda Powell of New Road in Rangeworthy. He was the fourth of five children and his siblings were Rufus, Mary Anne, Eliza Amelia and Phoebe (Bessy). His sister Mary Anne was the wife of George Marklove who also died in the war (see the separate entry for him). His father Noah worked as a labourer and had been born in Cromhall in 1860. Henry was working as a baker in 1911

Henry enlisted in Bristol. He joined the 8th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert’s) as a Private and was later promoted to Lance Corporal. Henry died in July 1917 at the age of 23. He is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. He is also commemorated on the Rangeworthy Parish Church Memorial and on the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board (now in Yate and District Heritage Centre). He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals
