Henry John Matthews was born in 1889 in Yatton to parents, William and Maria Matthews, he was brother to William and Elsie. William Matthews died before 1911. The family were then living at The Hill, Old Sodbury.

Henry enlisted in Bristol and served with the 9th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment, as a private. Henry died in mesopotamia on the 12th October 1918 aged 29 years and is buried in the Tehran War Cemetery in Iran. Henry was awarded the Victory and British War medals.

Henry John Mathews is mentioned on both the Old Sodbury, St John's Church memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Old Sodbury.
