On the day of his death, Henry was serving aboard the British steam merchant ship, the Stornest, which had been part of convoy ONS-136 until it became separated during heavy weather. The ship was on route from Belfast to Boston, carrying a cargo of 6000 tons of coal. At 04.05 hours on 12 October 1942, at a point west of Ireland, U-boat U-706 fired a torpedo at the now unescorted vessel, which struck under the aft mast. The master, 38 crew members and ten gunners, including Henry were all lost. There were no survivors.
