Herbert George Dando was possibly born in 1891. His mother’s maiden name was Griffin. He married Gertrude Mary Babb in 1916 in Bristol. His wife lived at 11 Lawrence Avenue in St. Mark’s in Bristol. His parents also lived in St. Mark’s in Bristol

Herbert enlisted in Bristol and joined the 1st Battalion of the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) as a Private. Herbert died in April 1917, aged about 25 years. He was awarded the Victory and the British War medals

He is remembered on the Arras Memorial in France. He is also remembered on the Wickwar War Memorials, the Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board (now at Yate and District Heritage Centre) and the Rangeworthy Church Memorial. He is also commemorated on the Rangeworthy Church Memorial Window
