Herbert attended Christ Church School in Hanham until 14 years old and then worked in the local Empire Boot Company. He met his wife Alice Amelia Gillingham (Dolly) here and they married in 1934 in Bristol. He loved football and followed Hanham Athletic, mainly because his father was the trainer of the team. He played cards and visited the Maypole and Elm Tree public houses
In 1940 he left the boot factory to join 41 Commando, Royal Marines and spent a year on the Isle of Wight on training exercises. He was killed at the battle of Salerno and initially buried in Piegolette, Gulf of Salerno and later moved to Salerno War Cemetery. Another local man, Tommy Fuge was a batman in the same command and was with Herbert when he was killed. Tommy survived the battle. Herbert (also known as Bert) had a 9 year old son also named Bert, when he was killed. Herbert's elder brother Frank was killed in WW1 and also remembered on WW1 Memorial at Hanham
