Herbert served with the 38 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was stationed in Libya and on the day of his death was flying in a Vickers Wellington on an anti-submarine patrol off Benghazi. Half an hour into the flight, the plane suffered engine failure and was forced to ditch into the sea. Herbert and 2 other crew members died, but there were also four survivors.
