Herbert Evans was born in about 1882 in Winterbourne. His parents were George and Sarah Evans. He was brother to Sarah, William, Austin, Elizabeth and Ernest. His father was a stonecutter and he had been born in Winterbourne.

Herbert joined the 11th Battalion of the Worcestershire Regiment and he became a corporal. Herbert died in December in 1917 at the age of 25.

Herbert is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery in Greece (E.1002). He is remembered on the memorial in All Saints Churchyard in Winterbourne Down and on the Whiteshill Common Memorial (Winterbourne Down face) in Hambrook.
