Herbert George Goodfield was born in 1888 in Winterbourne. His parents were George and Martha Goodfield. He had a brother called Frederick and a step-sister called Elsie Hobbs. He may have had more siblings younger than him. His father worked as a carter on a farm and he had been born in Cowship Lane in Cromhall. Herbert’s residence was in Frampton Cotterell, Bristol

Herbert joined the 6th Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry as a private. He died of his wounds in August 1916 at the age of 28. He had asked an army chaplain to write to his mother to tell her not to worry as he had only been hit in the leg. Unfortunately after receiving that letter she heard from the War Office that he had died. He is buried in Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery (Ref: I. C. 22.) in Bray-Sur-Somme in France
