Herbert John Green was born in 1896 at Frampton Cotterell to Alfred Thomas and Hannah, (nee Dando) of Watleys End, Winterbourne. His father worked as a coal miner (hewer). His siblings were Ada, George and Esther. All his parents and siblings were born in Frampton Cotterell. His parents married in 1888. Herbert married Agnes Julia Green (nee Amos) in 1916 and they had a son Herbert R. C. Green born in 1918.
Herbert served with the 8th Battalion of the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) as Private 43022. Herbert was Killed in Action on the 17th September 1918 and is buried at the Unicorn Cemetery, Vend’huile (Ref: I. B. 12.), Picardie, France.
Herbert John Green is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Coalpit Heath.
