Herbert John was the son of Herbert and Lucy Marklove of Little Brinsham at Yate Rocks. He was the brother of Frederick, Elizabeth, Annie and Florence. Their father was a farm labourer and had been born in Yate.

Herbert joined the 3rd Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was wounded in action and brought back to the military hospital in Maidstone, Kent where he died of his wounds two days after the Armistice.

Herbert is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church, Yate, his grave is North-West of the church.

Herbert John Marklove is remembered on the Yate Lych Gate Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate.
