Further information:
Hubert Roberts was born in 1895 (4th quarter) in Aust (Baptised St John's church, Aust 2/8/1896).
Hubert Roberts survived the war. He enlisted into the Worcester Regiment in 1914 and travelled overseas with his unit to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in November 1915 where he served in Egypt for 3 years. In June 1918 the battalion joined the North Persia Force. Hubert was discharged in June 1919, and presumably travelled home.
I can only speculate that the family had not heard from him, for nearly 4 years and assumed that he had not survived the war. On the 1939 Register, Hubert was living in Thornbury and he died in 1975. Hubert had a younger brother Herbert which I thought could have been a casualty, but he survived the war as well.
