When World War I was declared, in 1914, he was working in a sports shop in Bristol and planning to become a golf professional. In September 1914 he enlisted with the 2/4th Battalion (City of Bristol) of the Gloucestershire Regiment. They started their training at Northampton in the 183rd Brigade of the 61st (2nd South Midland) Division. In April 1915 they moved to Chelmsford and in February 1916 to Salisbury plain for further training. On 24th May 1916 the Battalion was sent to France. Not long after this, on July 5th, he was killed in action at Laventie, a small town in northern France.
