Herbert William George was the son of William and Elizabeth Winstone of 10 Leicester Square, Soundwell. His occupation was a Boot Operator (boot maker in a factory).

Herbert enlisted on the 9th of October 1915 and served with the Nelson Battalion RN Div of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. He was hospitalized from the 25th November 1916 to 5th February 1917, then rejoined his Battalion on the 18th February 1917. Herbert died on the 24th April 1917, just a few weeks later. Herbert William George is remembered on the Arras Memorial (Bay 1. MR 20) and the Staple Hill Memorial in Page Park.
