Herbert William was the son of William and Estella Higgs of Station Road, Yate, he was brother to sister Ella. Their father was a carter on a farm. The family had lived at Bowldown, near Tetbury
Herbert enlisted in Shirehampton near Bristol and joined the Royal Fusiliers, 8th Battalion, City of London Regiment. Shirehampton was where they shipped the horses to the front, it is likely that Herbert went with the horses requisitioned from the farm where he worked
Herbert died on the 3rd March 1917 and is buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery (Ref: XXI. L.5A). Herbert was 26 when he died
Herbert William Higgs is remembered on the Yate Lych Gate Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate
