On the day of his death, Horace was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant 'Bristol City' which was part of convoy ONS-5 on route from Milford Haven to New York carrying 2500 tons of general cargo, including china clay. At 04.22 and 04.28 hours on 5 May 1943 U-boat U-358 fired torpedoes at the convoy South of Cape Farewell and sank the 'Bristol City' along with another ship the 'Wentworth'. Eleven crew members and four gunners, including Horace, from the 'Bristol City' were lost. The 29 survivors were picked up and landed St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Horace was initially reported as missing which was changed 8 months later to presumed killed in action.
