Howard was killed when his aircraft Beaufort N1151 of 22 Squadron became lost on a patrol to Terschelling, an island off the Netherlands, strategically important to the Germans. He and his crew were listed as missing in action in January. The status was changed to presumed killed in September. Howard married Hazel McLaren in Leicester at the end of 1940 and had only been married a couple of months when he went missing.
