Further information:
Hubert was born in Littleton-upon-Severn, the son of a brick and tile maker and a middle child of ten with five brothers and four sisters. One of his brothers and one of his sisters died as children. A younger brother Arthur also saw war service and both brothers served and returned.
Hubert enlisted initially in the 4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment (23789) at Abertillery in August 1915. At the time of his enlistment he was described as 5’ 5” tall, weighing 9stone 4lbs and in good physical shape. As he was a skilled carpenter, he later transferred to the Royal Engineer “tunnelling boys” and would have most likely played a part in helping to dig the extensive network of tunnels below Arras.
Hubert was demobilised at Chiseldon in February 1919 and married Edith Dorothy May Latham in 1920 at Bridgend, Glamorgan. By 1939 Hubert was still working as a carpenter and wood machinist and the couple were living in Stradbroke Avenue, St. George, Bristol, where Hubert continued to live until his death of natural causes at the age of 89.
