Ivor Leonard was an Ordinary Seaman on HMS NIGER and died on Monday 6th July 1942 aged 20 yrs. Ivor was on board HMS Niger as it was leading a column of merchantmen of convoy QP 13 during their return to Britain. The weather was bad and visibility was reduced to one mile as a result HMS Niger had been unable to take bearings but made a sighting of land, which turned out to be an iceberg. She had unfortunately led the convoy into a British minefield off Iceland and was mined at 22.40 hours along with six of the merchants she was escorting and all but one sank. Ivor lost his life along with many others including the commander of the Niger. He is buried in he Reykjavik (Fossvogur) Cemetery in Iceland.
