Jack was the son of a foreman of a boot factory and the younger of 2 brothers.

Jack served with the 7th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's). He came over to France in the D-Day landings and died during operation Epsom in the battle for Caen. The fighting was particularly fierce in the village of Cheux where he is buried. He had been married a little over 6 months to Minnie Bowater by the time of his death.
