John was one of the original members of the 12th Battalion, Gloucester Regiment (Bristol's Own), joining in September 1914 and gained his commission in the 3rd Worcesters on June 17th 1915. He is buried in Forceville Communal Cemetery and Extension (Plot 2. Row E. Grave 1.), France
