James was born in Blaina, Monmouthshire. He married Lily Orchard in Bristol in 1937 and they moved to Kingswood.
On the day of his death, James was serving aboard HMS Itchen, a British Naval Frigate, when it was escorting an Atlantic westbound convoy in company with two Corvettes and a Canadian destroyer the St Croix. Just South of Iceland, the Itchen was torpedoed and sunk by submarine U-666 with the loss of 14 officers including the Commander and 134 ratings including James. A further 80 seamen from the St Croix, which had been sunk three days previously, also lost their lives.
