James Rugman was born in Itchington to parents, Henry and Eliza Rugman. In the 1911 Census James is listed as 13 years old, a labourer. James was the ninth of ten children and listed as a farm labourer.

James Rugman was killed on 4th August 1917 fighting with the 8th Yorks and Lancs Regiment. He is buried at the Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery, St.Omer, Department Pais de Calais, France.
