Further information:

John was the eldest of 4 children with a younger brother and 2 younger sisters. He was the son of a gardener who had seen service in WW1. John married (Maria) Clara Sambucci in 1921 in Brighton and they lived there for at least 9 years, as all 3 of their sons, Anthony, Patrick and Peter, were born there. John was a career soldier, serving in both World Wars. In WW1 he was a Transport Bombardier in the Royal Artillery and it is likely that he continued in the RA during the inter-war years. He was probably stationed at Preston Barracks, Brighton in the 1920s. John was living in Exeter at the time of his death, very near to what would have been Topsham Barracks. He therefore served for many years in the regular army and died in the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital from an unspecified “war illness”. His younger brother, Frederick Robert was also killed during WW2. John is not on the CWGC website.
