John was living and working in Wandsworth, London from 1933 until 1939. He married Amy (Ethel) Barnes who was a shorthand typist, at the end of 1936. John joined up in 1940 and on 15th February 1942 he was fighting in Singapore when he was captured by the Japanese. He was transported to Palembang POW camp in Indonesia where he died 3 years later from malnutrition, just 2 months before the end of the war.
