John was born and raised in Hanham, the son of a farmer's bailiff and the eldest child of three with a younger brother and sister. His sister Mabel Florence died in 1908 aged 7 and in 1909 John won a county scholarship to Kingswood senior school.
John enrolled in the Royal Marines in 1916 and served on HMS Ambitious which was a patrol boat minesweeper. John died at home three months after the ending of hostilities and the cause of his death was bronchopneumonia which was classified as war related sickness.
