John married Marian D Philips in the 3rd quarter of 1941.
John served with the 4th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. His battalion took part in the Normandy campaign and as part of the 43rd Wessex Infantry Division fought in a vicious battle for Hill 112 during which there were heavy casualties on both sides. The Wessex was finally victorious on 29th July when the hill was taken, on the same day that John lost his life.
