On the day of his death, John was serving aboard the Norwegian steam merchant ship, the Bonde which was part of convoy ONS-5. The ship was carrying a cargo of 1891 tons of coal across the North Atlantic. At 21.50 hours, U-boat U-266 hit the convoy off Newfoundland, with 4 torpedoes and sank 3 ships including the Bonde. The crew of the Bonde managed to launch a lifeboat and a raft and 12 survivors were rescued by a British frigate, an hour later. Unfortunately, 14 others, including John, perished.
