John would have been called up as soon as war broke out and his battalion ("B" Company, 1st Battalion) was mobilised to France and in August 1914, where they fought in the Battle and retreat from Mons, followed by the battles of the Marne and the Aisne. John was killed in action during the Battle of Gheluvelt (29 October-31 October 1914) one of the First Battles of Ypres (19 October – 22 November 1914) The outcome of the battle was indecisive at a cost of 80,000 allied casualties. John's body was never identified and the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where he is remembered, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and who have no known grave.
