John's father was a general labourer and John was the eldest of 4 children.

On the day of his death, John was serving aboard the unescorted British Steam Merchant, ‘Shahzada’, on route from Mormugao, Goa (India) to Aden (Yemen) carrying a cargo of 5000 tons of peanuts. On 9 July 1944, the vessel was torpedoed and sunk by U-boat U-196 about 470 miles west-southwest of Bombay. The master, 36 crew members and nine gunners, including John, were lost. The 52 survivors were rescued by 3 different ships and landed in Bombay, Goa and Aden.
